155th SMBC Anniversary

This year's Homecoming Committee welcomes you to join us at the celebration of our 155th anniversary!

In 1863, Galilee Baptist Church was organized by 25 members who were both African American and Caucasian.  Eventually, the church was reorganized by the African American members and moved to Hickory Grove Church Road.  The members elected Rev. Tom Barnwell as the first pastor.

On September 18, 1874, members Rufus and Susan Friday gave land for a new church after the original Galilee was destroyed by fire.  A log structure was built of the land and named after the hometown of Rev. Burton's hometown -- Springfield, West Virginia.  Thus begins the history of Springfield Memorial Baptist Church or SMBC.

Through the years SMBC developed and grew into a full service church and organization.  The history of SMBC is rich in accomplishments for the congregation and greater community.

Homecoming services begin at 10am on May 20.  It is followed by lunch and continues with an afternoon program which begins at approximately 2pm.  This year's afternoon speaker is Rev. Byron McIlwain of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Come and enjoy the history and fellowship!
